The "Safe Phone" Configuration
Before you even download an app, make sure your operating system is working for you.
For iPhone Users (iOS 26+)
[ ] Enable "Check In": In iMessage, tap the + and select Check In. This automatically notifies a friend when you arrive at your destination (or if you don’t).
[ ] Lockdown Mode: If you’re traveling to a high-risk area or feel you’re being targeted digitally, turn this on in Settings > Privacy & Security.
[ ] Satellite SOS: Ensure you know how to trigger this (hold power + volume button) if you ever lose cell service while hiking or traveling.
For Android Users (Android 16/17)
[ ] Identity Check: Turn on Biometric Gating. If your phone is stolen and the thief has your PIN, they still can't access banking or sensitive settings without your face/fingerprint.
[ ] Theft Detection Lock: Enable this in Settings. It uses AI to sense a "snatch-and-run" (the specific motion of someone grabbing your phone and running) and instantly locks the screen.
[ ] Private Space: Use this to hide banking and social apps behind a second layer of authentication.
The Safety App Stack
[ ] Noonlight (Best for "Vibe Checks"): Hold a button on your screen when you feel uneasy (like walking to your car). Release it and enter your PIN when you're safe. If you don't enter the PIN, it silent-calls 911 with your GPS.
[ ] GeoSure: Check this before booking an Airbnb. it gives neighborhoods "safety scores" based on crime, health, and specific ratings for Women’s Safety and LGBTQ+ Safety.
[ ] bSafe: Use the "Fake Call" feature to get out of an awkward date or the "Follow Me" feature to let a friend virtually walk you home via GPS.
[ ] EchoSOS: Essential for international travel. It automatically knows the local emergency number for 130+ countries so you don't have to Google it in a panic.
Digital & Identity Protection
[ ] Passkeys: Switch from passwords to Passkeys for your Google, iCloud, and banking accounts. They are phishing-resistant by design.
[ ] Delete Old Permissions: Go to your app settings and "Auto-reset permissions" for apps you haven't used in 90 days.
[ ] Burner Aliases: Use a service like Cloaked or Apple’s "Hide My Email" when signing up for rewards programs or apps so your real data isn't leaked in a breach.
The Physical "Go" Essentials
[ ] MagSafe / Slim Power Bank: A dead phone is the biggest safety risk. Never leave home with less than 50% battery.
[ ] Rubber Door Wedge: A $5 item that prevents anyone with a master key (like a hotel or Airbnb host) from entering your room while you sleep.
[ ] Physical Security Key: (e.g., YubiKey) Keep one on your keychain as a backup to log into your accounts if your phone is stolen.
